Womens football

Women's Gaelic football is very similar to the mens Gaelic football, where two teams of 15 players kick or hand-pass a round ball towards goals at either end of a grass pitch.

Most of the rules of the game are parallel to those for men's Gaelic football.  The few differences include:

  • A player may pick the ball up directly from the ground, so long as she is standing
  • Kickouts may be taken from the hand
  • It is permitted to change the ball from one hand to the other
  • All deliberate bodily contact is forbidden except when "shadowing" an opponent, competing to catch the ball, or blocking the delivery of the ball.
  • A smaller size 4 gaelic ball is used compared to the size 5 ball used in the men's game.

Such is the attraction of women’s football that many players who normally competed in other sports such as Australian rules and rugby now play what is considered by many to be the best field sport for women with a minimal risk of injury due to the fact the rules prohibit intentional contact.

In Melbourne there are five women's football teams who train in and around the city.  A large number of Aussie women play as well as Irish and all teams welcome new players no matter what their playing ability or experience so contact a club near you to play!
